History

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 2007 through the amalgamation of two Departments: the Department of Mechanics, Processing and Storage of Agro-products, and the Department of the Technology of Metals, Metrology and Standardization. This new Department was headed by Doctor of Engineering, professor Mykola Kogut.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering dates back to the 1878, when the Dublyany High Tillage School provided cources on engineering and technology on which the students studied general technical subjects (draft, physics with metrology), and special subjects (engineering mechanics, physical metallurgy, processing machines of agri-products). Those subjects are still  taught. During 1878-1911 mechanical workshops, forge, stack-yard, distillery, fruit hot-house and presses for the fruit paste making were built for this purpose.

In 1946 in Dublyany L’viv Agrarian Institute was founded on the basis of the Faculty of Forestry and Agriculture at L’viv Politechnic Institute. The Faculty was set up in 1919. In 1947 two Departments were opened at L’viv Agrarian Institute: the Department of Metal Technology (Volodymyr Paryzhs’kyy became the first head of it), and the Department of Metal Resistance  (Vasyl’ Trakalo became the head of it). In result of social and political changes in Ukraine, in 1993 the Department of Storage and Processing Machinery was set up (Vasyl’ Sholud’ko became the first head).

Such scientists as Volodymyr Rudomjotkin, Volodymyr Yahymovych, Andriy Chechel, Mariya Bintcey, Olhert Kurylo, Orest Hoshko, senior professor Zinaida Krasnova, Stepan Koshil’, Yaroslav Vasylyna and many others worked here.

There are three field in which the Department provides the scientific work:

1)       technology and designing machinery for:

-         producing, strenghening and reparing of machinery parts, energy, food and processing equipment;

-         designing of technical means of mechanization ant automatization of techlogical process of storage and processing of agri-products;

2)       modeling and optimizing of loaders infrastructure;

3)       controlling the projects of processing and food enterprises.

The student are able to take a post-graduate course. 5 monographies, over 450 scientific works and theses were published by the staff, 12 patents and 47 copyright certificates.

Scientific and Research work

The best students are engaged in the scientific and research work of the Department. There are 7 scientific clubs here: descriptive geometry, material science, theory of machines and mechanizms, machines parts, load-lifting machinery, interchangeability and standardization, and technical measurements, machinery and equipment of processing and food technology. There are three enterprises of high techlological level where the students are able to practice, test new scientific developments of the staff, post-graduates and students.

Teaching process

More than 20 subjects are provided for the students of four specialities. New majors are opened at the faculty such as: ‘Equipment of Processing and Food Technology’ and ‘Load-lifting, building, road machinery and equipment’. There is a strong material and technical base at the Department. 8 laboratories, computer room and the buckwheat shop are here.
