History of the Department

We could hardly imagine the cultural development of students of Lviv National Agrarian University without the work of Department of Ukrainian Culture Studies.

The Department of Ukrainian Studies was established by the rector’s order from December 10, 1993, on ground of information letter of Ministry of Education of Ukraine, according to which the heads of higher educational establishments got recommendation to concentrate all Ukrainian studies subjects at one department.

The department of History of Ukraine, which functioned in Lviv Agrarian Institute before, became the foundation which the mentioned subdivision of university appeared on.

At that time Ukrainian studies subjects such as “Business Ukrainian”, “Agrarian History of Ukraine”, “Theory and History of World and Ukrainian Culture”, were in curricula of the Department of Foreign Languages and Political Sciences. The staff of the established Department included 11 lecturers, 2 professors, Doctors of History: V.P. Plysiuk, V.V. Dobretsova, 4 assistant professors, candidate of History: V.P. Dyachenko, Ya.I. Chernyak, P.P. Chornovol, M.Yu. Chopovskyi, 5 lecturers: O.M. Kozlovska, Yu.M. Sydorchuk, H.A. Barabash, A.M. Kuza, I.P. Tarasyuk. In 2008-2009 Department was headed by professor V.P. Plysyuk.

The Department operates the educational and methodological room which in 1991 was renamed and reorganized into interdepartment room of Humanities education (the chief of the room – S. Novosad, senior laboratory assistant – S.P. Kuryltsiv). It is focused at educational methodological literature and references in subjects that are studied at the Departments of Ukrainian Culture Studies and Philosophy and Political Sciences. Besides, the room acts as an information centre in Humanities Sciences: it possesses scientific periodicals, keeps literature catalogues and publications in magazines, and supplies the educational process with technical means and visual aids. With the help of lecturers and students (on the initiative of assistant O.M. Kozlovska) a corner of material culture and life of Ukrainian people was created.

During the last years the staff of the above mentioned unit of Lviv National Agrarian University has been considerably renewed. Today 12 lecturers work at the Department and carry out voluminous scientific research work in Ukrainian, history of Ukraine, and Ukrainian culture, culture sciences, rhetoric; they improve the methodology of teaching Ukrainian Culture Science disciplines according to the modern requirements.

Staff of the Department

Since September 2009, the Department is headed by the acting assistant professor A.M. Kuza. Simultaneously the staff of the Department was completed with honored professors, famous and young scientists of modern generation. Today, the Department consists of: 4 professors, 3 Doctors of History V.P. Plysiuk, V.S. Idzio, and M.S. Pasichnyk and Doctor of Philology O.A. Serbenska; 2 assistant professors, Candidate of History P.P. Diachenko, and Candidate of Philology R.V. Kiuntsli; 5 acting assistant professors A.M. Kuza, Honored Culture Worker of Ukraine T.Z. Mandiuk, H.A. Barabash, Candidate of Philology O.V. Derpak and Candidate of History O.Ph. Yurchuk; 2 senior lecturers – O.M. Horda and I.V. Baran. The active assistant of the staff is the laboratory assistant T.A. Kushnariova. The staff of the Department works at number of different structural subdivisions of the University, in particular, T.Z. Mandiuk - Vice – Rector in behalf of Educational and Pedagogical Work, A.M. Kuza – editor-in-chief of Lviv National Agrarian University periodical – “University News”, assistant rector, O.M. Horda – deputy dean of the Faculty of Building and Architecture on behalf of Pedagogical Work.

Educational Process

The Department gives lectures in Humanitarian disciplines: “History of Ukraine”, “History of Culture of Ukraine”, “Culture Studies”, “Ukrainian Studies”, “Professional Ukrainian”, “Professional Ukrainian (oral and scientific speech)” and “Rhetorics”. Academic programs and methodological supply for these disciplines are worked out according to the requirements of Bologna process, as well as tests that are used for students’ exams (in Moodle system).

The Department prepared and published a number of educational accessories and methodological books on History of Ukraine (professor V.P. Plysiuk, assistant professor P.P. Diachenko, M.Yu. Chopovskyi, acting assistant professor O.F. Yurchuk, senior lecturer O.M. Horda, and I.V. Baran), Ukrainian and Foreign Culture (professor V.P. Plysyuk, assistant professor L.S. Kachmar, assistant professor P.P. Diachenko), Culture Science (assistant professot R.V. Kiuntsli and senior lecturer T.Z. Mandiuk and O.M. Horda), Professional Ukrainian and Culture of Speech (acting assistant professor H.A. Barabash, A.M. Kuza, O.V. Derpak, assistant I.P. Tarasyuk), Russian-Ukrainian Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terminology “Agrarian Mechanization and Power Engineering” (acting assistant professor O.V. Derpak in co-authorship with assistant professor of Engineering V.M. Haiduchok), and also edition “Ukrainian Year in Signs and Adjectives” (acting assistant professor H.A.Barabash in co-authorship with H.V. Onkovych and A.D. Onkovych ) and “Culture Studies under Conditions of Credit-Modular System: Tests” (assistant professor R.V. Kiuntsli and senior lecturer O.M. Horda in co-authorship with academician V.V. Snitynskyi), that are recommended by the Ministry of Education as  educational accessories for students of Higher Educational Establishments of Ukraine.

The Department takes place in scientific practical and scientific methodological conferences; annually the staffs of the Department publish scores of materials in scientific collected volumes and magazines. The Department started edition of “Herald of Humanities Sciences of Lviv National Agrarian University”.

Lecturers of the Department are very active participants of social and public life of the University: they organize the meetings with famous people, excursions, literary-artistic evenings, presentations of new books, scientific lecturing, give lectures on the subjects of Ukrainian, Culture, and History.
